S60 and Security

Security is an essential part of mobile devices. Nokia takes all security issues seriously, and works constantly to enhance the security of S60 software on Symbian OS. Devices based on S60 already contain many security features, from application run-time security to support for add-on applications such as anti-virus suites. The security of the platform is under continuous development, as can be seen in the new security framework introduced as part of S60 3rd Edition. This framework helps protect the applications and information on S60 devices.

Users can also protect their S60 devices against malicious applications by taking some simple precautions:

  • Exercise caution when accepting applications sent via Bluetooth or opening MMS attachments, as they may include harmful software
  • Do not approve or download content to a mobile device from an unknown or unreliable source

In addition to the built-in security features of S60, add-on anti-virus applications for specific S60 devices are available from:

For additional protection of sensitive information stored on the device, users can use add-on encryption applications. Pointsec (www.pointsec.com ») offers a solution for real-time encryption of data stored on S60 devices. Utimaco's SafeGuard PrivateCrypto, available for S60 3rd Edition devices, offers strong encryption support and it can be freely downloaded for example from Nokia Business Catalog (www.businesssoftware.nokia.com »).

If you experience any problems with your mobile device, please contact your handset manufacturer or network operator/carrier to receive appropriate support and advice for your specific handset. Information about S60 handset vendors can be found from here »
